Power Sector Opportunities Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions Arkansas

• Utilizing existing infrastructure offers three primary CO2 reduction paths: running the most efficient natural gas plants at 75 percent capacity could reduce 2020 emissions by 30 percent relative to 2011; increasing combined heat and power (CHP) use by 33 percent above 2012 levels could reduce 2020 emissions by 2 percent relative to 2011; and improving coal plant efficiency by 2.5 percent could reduce 2020 emissions by 1 percent relative to 2011.
• Clean energy opportunities include meeting state energy efficiency standards for investor-owned utilities, which could cut power sector CO2 emissions by 7 percent in 2020 compared to 2011 levels if 2015 savings goals are met annually. Additionally, achieving a 15 percent share of electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2020 could reduce power sector CO2 emissions by 9 percent compared to 2011 levels.
