Jakarta Creates 50+ New Parks to Boost Climate Resilience

WRI Indonesia's Cities4Forests initiative helped Jakarta implement two new regulations in 2021 regarding tree management and park provision. This collaboration led to the creation of 54 new urban parks since 2022 and the planting of over 65,000 urban trees, specifically targeting underserved areas to mitigate air pollution, extreme heat, and flooding.

• Since 2022, the Jakarta government has established 54 new urban parks and planted more than 65,000 urban trees following the 2021 issuance of regulations on tree management, protection, and park utilization.
• WRI Indonesia provided technical support to Jakarta through the Cities4Forests initiative, which included analyzing existing green spaces to identify underserved areas for priority development, conducting tree inventory training for the Park and Urban Trees Agency, and launching public communications campaigns.
• The urban greening efforts in Jakarta are intended to address environmental challenges including air pollution, extreme heat, and flooding, while ensuring parks are accessible to children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
