Jakarta Creates 50+ New Parks to Boost Climate Resilience

WRI Indonesia's Cities4Forests initiative supported the Jakarta government in establishing 54 new urban parks and planting over 65,000 trees to combat air pollution, extreme heat, and flooding.

• WRI Indonesia's Cities4Forests initiative assisted Jakarta in enhancing urban climate resilience and green space access by helping the government develop two regulations in 2021 regarding tree management and park provision and maintenance. WRI provided technical support, including analyzing underserved areas for park prioritization, conducting tree inventory training for the Park and Urban Trees Agency, and running public communications campaigns.
• Following the 2021 regulations, Jakarta established 54 new parks starting in 2022 and planted more than 65,000 urban trees. These parks are intended to be inclusive for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, and are strategically placed in areas that previously lacked greenery to help mitigate flooding, cool and clean the air, and curb climate change.
• The regulatory approach implemented in Jakarta has served as a model for other regions, leading the local government of South Sulawesi in Indonesia to draft its own similar regulation on tree protection and management.
