Rio de Janeiro Makes Streets Safer for School Children

WRI Brasil supported Rio de Janeiro in securing a $135.2 million World Bank loan to improve road safety around public schools and expand sustainable mobility infrastructure.

• WRI Brasil conducted 30 road-safety audits to identify risks and provide design recommendations, which served as the analytical basis for a $135.2 million World Bank loan to Rio de Janeiro for school-area safety, pedestrian street design, and the expansion of cycling networks.
• The city of Rio de Janeiro has already implemented traffic-calming measures—including narrowing roadways, expanding sidewalks, installing crosswalks, and reducing speed limits—in 57 areas near schools, while over 200 schools have taken part in awareness and education programs.
• The initiative addresses a critical safety gap in Brazil, where nearly 900 children died in traffic crashes in 2023. In Rio de Janeiro, nearly half of students walk to school, often facing speeding vehicles and a lack of accessible paths, particularly in low-income neighborhoods.
