Tracking Progress of the 2020 Climate Turning Point

The World Resources Institute (WRI) assesses global progress toward six milestones established by Mission 2020 across energy, transport, land use, industry, infrastructure, and finance to determine if the world is on a path to stabilize global warming below 1.5°C.

• Global progress toward the six Mission 2020 milestones is uneven; while some outcomes have seen accelerating action, most are currently insufficient or off track.
• There are significant, untapped opportunities to accelerate action across all sectors. The WRI notes that countries can use the 2020 window to enhance their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement to prevent long-term emissions-intensive pathways.
• The ability to accurately monitor progress is hindered by data availability, including data lags and insufficient information, which can distort evaluations and impede accountability for countries, companies, and regions.
