COP25: Time for governments to harness the zero-carbon future

The We Mean Business coalition asserts that a transition to a zero-carbon economy by 2050 is achievable and offers significant economic and health benefits. While over 1,060 companies with a combined market capitalization of over US$20.1 trillion have committed to climate action, the document emphasizes that government policy must match this ambition. It calls on COP25 leaders to commit to economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2050, strengthen Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in line with a 1.5C trajectory, and integrate decarbonization across all government departments, including finance, energy, agriculture, health, industry, and transport.

• Global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion and processes rose by 1.9% in 2018 compared to 2017, highlighting the gap in reaching the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting warming to 1.5C and achieving net-zero by 2050.
• Significant corporate momentum exists, with more than 1,060 companies in the We Mean Business coalition partners' initiatives representing nearly one quarter of the global economy with a market capitalization exceeding US$20.1 trillion.
• Over 100 major companies, including SAP, Iberdrola, and Mahindra, have committed to climate targets aligned with a 1.5C limit and net-zero emissions by 2050, while nearly 700 companies have committed to science-based targets.
• The coalition urges governments to accelerate the transition through three specific actions: committing to economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2050, strengthening NDCs and 2030 targets for a 1.5C trajectory, and establishing the necessary national laws and plans.
