PLATFORM FOR ACCELERATING THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Summary
The Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy (PACE) is a public-private initiative hosted by the World Economic Forum to scale circular economy transitions. It focuses on four key areas: electronics and hardware, plastics, food and bioeconomy, and business model and market transformation. The platform aims to address the 'recoupling' of economic growth with resource consumption, which could see raw material demand double by 2050. PACE operates through a Global Leadership Group of over 40 partners to develop blended financing models, adjust policy frameworks, and implement large-scale projects in regions including Africa, China, ASEAN, and Europe.
Key insights
- Global material resource use grew at twice the rate of population growth during the 20th century, and the last decade has seen a "recoupling" where more resources are consumed per unit of GDP. If this continues, raw material demand is projected to double by 2050 to maintain current economic growth.
- The transition to a circular economy is estimated to be a $4.5 trillion global growth opportunity by 2030, offering benefits such as waste avoidance, increased business efficiency, and new employment.
- PACE is implementing a project in Nigeria to create a circular electronics recovery system that can be replicated across Africa, addressing the fact that only 20% of global e-waste is recycled through appropriate channels.
- In China, PACE is working to develop a secondary material supply system for recycled electronics, noting that for four metal groups (Aluminium, Tin, Cobalt, and Rare Earths), only $160 million of a potential $1.3 billion in value is recovered by the formal recycling industry.
- The platform is targeting plastic leakage in the ASEAN region, starting with Indonesia, to address the fact that five countries—Indonesia, China, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam—are responsible for 60% of plastics entering marine ecosystems.
- PACE is launching a Circular Supply Chain Accelerator in Europe to help medium-sized companies (SMEs) transform their business models, as a circular economy shift in Europe could generate €320 billion by 2025.
- The initiative is promoting the use of public procurement as a lever for the circular economy, noting that public procurement accounts for an average of 12% of GDP in OECD countries and up to 30% in many developing countries.
