The link between ageing and climate change

The author asserts that population ageing and climate change are linked, as increased longevity leads to higher resource consumption and greater environmental burdens. The text calls for a transition to a sustainable economy to support continued longevity without further exceeding planetary boundaries, noting that some corporations and the life insurance sector are already integrating sustainability goals into their practices.

• Population ageing and climate change are linked because as people live longer, the human population consumes more resources, which increases the burden on the environment and contributes to climate change.
• Both ageing and climate change were identified by Peter Heller of the IMF in 2003 as the primary threats to long-term fiscal policy.
• Current economic models that have improved the quality and quantity of life are based on the extensive use of non-renewable resources and development methods that have exceeded planetary boundaries.
• Progress toward sustainability is occurring across multiple sectors, including the life insurance sector, which is developing methods to enhance member longevity while promoting environmental sustainability.
