Earth Day 2020: Why global reforestation will restore the earth’s health

• Human activity has severely impacted the planet, with 75% of terrestrial ecosystems altered, over 85% of wetlands lost, and up to 1 million species facing extinction. Forests are being lost at a rate of one football field per minute daily, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions that have risen by approximately 90% since 1970.
• Forests provide critical ecological and health benefits, acting as carbon sinks and regulating weather. Deforestation is linked to 31% of outbreaks of new and emerging diseases, including Ebola, Zika, and the Nipah virus.
• Forestry is a significant source of global employment and livelihood, supporting over 54 million jobs worldwide. Approximately 1.6 billion people, or more than 25% of the global population, depend on forest resources, with 1.2 billion using trees on farms for food and income. In the US, investing $1 million in reforestation and sustainable forest management can create seven times more jobs than an equivalent investment in fossil fuels.
• The 1t.org Trillion Trees Platform was launched to support the conservation, restoration, and growth of 1 trillion trees by 2030, contributing to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 led by UNEP and FAO.
