LET’S END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND SECURE GENDER JUSTICE (2022-2030)
Summary
The WACC and WCC are launching a coalition to transform the media environment into one that is more equitable and inclusive for women and girls. The strategy focuses on three pillars: capacity strengthening for communicators and journalists, the creation of an Ecumenical Gender & Media Observatory for participatory monitoring, and evidence-based advocacy to hold media and digital platforms accountable. The initiative responds to high rates of online violence against women journalists and the systemic underrepresentation of women as experts and subjects in news coverage.
Key insights
- Significant proportions of women and girls experience violence, with a particular rise in digital harassment. Data cited indicates that 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide have faced violence in their lifetime, 58% of girls have experienced online harassment, and 73% of surveyed women journalists have been subjected to online violence.
- News media exhibits a severe deficit in accountability to women, characterized by the underrepresentation of women as both subjects and sources. In the 6th Global Media Monitoring Project, only 1% of stories were categorized under the "gender and related" major topic, which primarily covers gender violence against women and girls.
- Women in political leadership are specifically targeted via digital platforms; 82% of women parliamentarians across five regions have experienced psychological violence, primarily through social media, during their terms.
- The WACC and WCC plan to establish an Ecumenical Gender & Media Observatory to generate evidence through participatory media monitoring. This body will publicize Global Media Monitoring Project results, create "Thursdays in Black" media watch groups, and institute media awards to recognize good practice or call out sexist content.
