Democracy, as we know it, is about to die…

The author discusses the closure of The Vindicator, a family-owned newspaper in Youngstown, Ohio, as a symptom of the decline of local journalism. The text argues that the loss of regular reporting on local government, school boards, and courts undermines public accountability and democracy. While citing the shift toward digital platforms and free news as a cause for the decline in paid subscriptions, the author advocates for a collective movement to champion independent and diverse media in the digital sphere to maintain an informed citizenry.

• The closure of The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio, is viewed as a threat to local democracy because it removes regular journalistic oversight of school board meetings, city council meetings, police, and courts.
• The decline of local newspapers is driven by a reduction in paid subscriptions as print media loses ground to digital platforms and consumers prioritize free news and entertainment services.
• There is a need for a collective movement to support sustainable, independent, and diverse media within the digital sphere to ensure public accountability and an informed citizenry.
