COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action

The COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action outlines a framework to leverage digital innovation for greenhouse gas reduction and climate resilience while addressing the digital sector's own energy and water consumption, e-waste, and the digital divide.

• The declaration identifies significant environmental risks associated with the digital sector's life cycle, specifically highlighting the energy and water needs of data centres and artificial intelligence, as well as pollution from production and the unsustainable disposal of obsolete infrastructure.
• The framework proposes eight common objectives to align digitalisation with climate goals, including the use of digital tools for GHG emissions abatement, the creation of climate-resilient digital infrastructure, and the promotion of energy-efficient practices to achieve net zero emissions.
• The declaration emphasizes that digital divides and the spread of disinformation are major obstacles to global climate efforts, calling for increased digital literacy and accessibility for women, youth, Least Developed Countries, and Small Island Developing States.
• To ensure accountability and progress, the declaration calls for the deployment of assessment methodologies to estimate the net climate impact of green digital solutions and the establishment of metrics to monitor the impact of ICTs on the climate.
