• The Indonesian public is facing severe economic pressure characterized by a fragile economy, with 60% of the workforce in the informal sector and millions of middle-class citizens falling into poverty. This is exacerbated by climate-crisis-driven price hikes and local property tax (PBB) increases exceeding 1,200% in various regions.
• Fiscal contradictions exist under the Prabowo administration, where efficiency measures are offset by an expanded government structure (more ministries) and a 335 trillion IDR allocation for the 'Makan Bergizi Gratis' (MBG) program in 2026. This has led to reduced regional transfers, forcing local governments to implement high tax levies, sparking protests in areas such as Pati.
• There is a stark disparity in tax burdens: while political officials and DPR-RI members receive allowances exceeding 50 million IDR per month and have their income tax paid by the state, laid-off workers must still pay income tax (PPh) on their severance pay and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan benefits.
