Agua Sin Límites

The 'Agua Sin Límites' (Water Without Limits) initiative by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) proposes a new agenda for sustainable water management. It aims to address the limitations of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) by focusing on tele-connections beyond the basin, multi-scale participatory approaches to address social inequalities, and the early integration of ecosystem needs into planning.

• The 'Agua Sin Límites' initiative seeks to replace or expand the current status quo of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), which the document claims has not yet produced sustainable water results and may inadvertently cause conflicts or exclude essential users.

• SEI is implementing the 'Agua Sin Límites' agenda through pilot studies in the Mekong river basin in Southeast Asia and the Magdalena river basin in Colombia, while also reflecting on work conducted in California, USA.
• The Mekong river basin covers 795,000 square kilometers and provides food security for over 70 million people in the Indo-Burma region, flowing through China, Myanmar, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
• The Magdalena river basin covers 250,000 square kilometers, representing nearly a quarter of Colombia's national territory and supporting over 35 million people (70% of the Colombian population), including three-quarters of the country's agricultural production.
