Agua Sin Límites

The 'Agua Sin Límites' initiative seeks to evolve water management beyond traditional Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), which the authors argue has failed to produce sustainable results. The initiative focuses on three pillars: analyzing water connections beyond the immediate basin, implementing multi-scale participatory approaches to address inequalities (including gender and poverty), and integrating ecosystem needs early in the planning process. These frameworks are being tested through pilot studies in the Mekong and Magdalena river basins, as well as reflecting on work in California.

• The existing framework of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is considered insufficient because, despite its influence over thirty years, it has not achieved sustainable water outcomes and may inadvertently cause conflicts or exclude essential users.
• The 'Agua Sin Límites' initiative is built on three strategic pillars: expanding water management to include 'tele-connections' and decision-making spheres outside the immediate basin; using multi-scale analysis to identify and address inequalities related to gender, poverty, and marginalized groups; and incorporating ecosystem processes and needs throughout the planning cycle.
• The initiative is implementing pilot studies in the Mekong basin, which covers 795,000 km2 and supports over 70 million people across China, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and the Magdalena basin in Colombia, which covers 250,000 km2 and supports over 35 million people.
