Global Shipping Watch

This fact sheet describes Global Shipping Watch (GSW), an open-access demonstration platform developed by the Stockholm Environment Institute to link maritime emissions with specific supply chain actors, including traders, carriers, and consumers.

• Global Shipping Watch is designed to overcome the previous inability to link maritime transport emissions to specific companies, products, countries, or consumer choices, which has hindered the accurate assessment of scope 3 emissions in corporate reporting.
• The platform utilizes a five-step methodology to match detailed cargo records with vessel movements obtained from the Automatic Information System (AIS). Emissions are calculated based on the Fourth IMO Greenhouse Study methodology, which integrates AIS operational data—such as speed, heading, and draft—with vessel technical specifications like engine power and fuel consumption rates.
• The initial data release for the platform covers maritime imports and exports of the United States, as well as exports from Indonesia, Peru, Chile, and Brazil for the year 2019.
• The platform provides three access points: a free Dashboard for querying emissions by product, company, country, and carrier; a Demo Map available on request for vessel-level data; and free Factsheets providing summaries of exports, imports, and emissions by country.
• Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a figure that exceeds the emissions produced by the aviation sector.
