PRINCE Policy Relevant Indicators for National Consumption and Environment

The PRINCE research project (2015–2018), led by Statistics Sweden with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) as a key partner, developed a new set of consumption-based environmental indicators for Sweden. By linking the EXIOBASE3 multiregional input-output (MRIO) model with Swedish national environmental-economic accounts, the project provided detailed data on where the impacts of Swedish consumption fall globally and across various product groups, moving beyond simple awareness-raising to provide policy-relevant information.

• The PRINCE project created a tailor-made model to generate consumption-based environmental indicators by combining the EXIOBASE3 multiregional input-output (MRIO) model with Swedish national environmental-economic accounts. This approach allowed for the direct comparison of impacts occurring within Sweden's borders against those along international supply chains.
• The indicators were designed to support Sweden's 'Generational Goal,' which aims to solve major environmental problems for future generations without increasing environmental or health issues outside of Sweden.
• SEI contributed specific technical developments to the project, including a method for tracking impacts of wild-caught marine fish by species and location, reweighting water use indicators based on scarcity at production sites, and using a data-driven approach to estimate carbon emissions from marine cargo ships at Swedish ports.
