Water Beyond Boundaries: A new agenda for managing a vital resource

The Stockholm Environment Institute's Water Beyond Boundaries (WBB) initiative aims to evolve water planning beyond the traditional Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) paradigm. WBB focuses on three pillars: extending management beyond the immediate watershed to include global resource flows, implementing multi-scale participatory tools to address social inequalities (including gender and poverty), and integrating ecosystem needs throughout the planning process. The initiative is being tested through pilot studies in the Mekong River basin and the Magdalena River Basin, while reflecting on previous work in California.

• The Water Beyond Boundaries (WBB) initiative is built on three pillars: expanding the scope of management beyond the watershed to include external resource flows and decision-making spheres, using multi-scale analysis to address inequalities related to gender, poverty, and marginalized groups, and incorporating ecosystem processes into planning tools.
• WBB is implementing pilot studies in the Mekong River basin, which covers 795,000 square kilometres and supports 70 million people in the Indo-Burma region, and the Magdalena River Basin, which covers 250,000 square kilometres and supports 70% of Colombia's population.
