Water Beyond Boundaries: A new agenda for managing a vital resource

The Stockholm Environment Institute's Water Beyond Boundaries (WBB) initiative seeks to establish a new agenda for sustainable water planning to address gaps in the existing Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) framework, specifically regarding scale, scope, and time.

• The WBB agenda is built on three pillars: extending water management beyond the immediate watershed to include resource flows and decision-making spheres outside the area; utilizing multi-scale analysis tools to identify inequalities related to poverty, gender, and marginalized groups; and integrating ecosystem needs and processes throughout the planning process.
• The Mekong River watershed covers 795,000 square kilometres, supports high biodiversity, and provides food security for more than 70 million people in the Indo-Burma region. The river flows through China, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
• The Magdalena River Basin covers 250,000 square kilometres, representing nearly 25% of Colombia's national territory. It supports over 35 million people (70% of the national population) and accounts for 75% of Colombia's agricultural production.
