This delivery report describes a matchmaking workshop held on 4 May 2021 by TEM – Lund University as part of the sWASH&grow project. The event aimed to explore how sustainable healthcare infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries can serve as a leverage point for implementing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) solutions and fostering sustainable community development.

• The healthcare sector is a significant contributor to global climate change, with an estimated 4.4% of total global CO2 emissions originating from healthcare. This positioning makes hospitals and the broader healthcare sector critical actors in efforts to reduce the global carbon footprint.
• Sustainable healthcare infrastructure can act as a catalyst for broader regional development. Because safe healthcare depends on WASH and infrastructure solutions, establishing sustainable health facilities can create demand for these services in developing areas, potentially serving as a starting point for the creation of sustainable cities or communities.
• A matchmaking workshop held on 4 May 2021 attracted 82 registrations, including representatives from 29 companies and 31 organizations. The event sought to initiate dialogue on using healthcare as a frontrunner for sustainable infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries.
• The workshop resulted in two specific project opportunities: one in India in collaboration with MAMTA, involving a planned webinar on 19 October 2021 and a live event in New Delhi in February 2022; and another in Tanzania involving Läkarmissionen and UNDP, with funding applications planned for early fall 2021.
• Combining sustainability, healthcare, WASH, and aid creates a unique niche for Swedish exports. The report notes that WASH and healthcare typically use different export ecosystems regarding procurement and financing, and specialized WASH solutions for hospitals provide a unique selling point that differentiates them from mainstream export routes.
