This 2017 report by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) assesses the life-cycle carbon footprint of a proposed wood biorefinery in Estonia. The study concludes that the facility would be climate-neutral and would positively contribute to Estonia's climate goals by replacing oil shale electricity with renewable energy and sequestering biogenic carbon in products.

- In terms of biogenic carbon, the plant would sequester an average of 1.3 tonnes of biogenic CO2-e per tonne of finished product, after accounting for the 0.33 tonnes of biogenic CO2-e emitted during renewable energy production.
- Compared to a 'null scenario' where the plant does not exist and wood is exported, the proposed facility would reduce fossil CO2 emissions by approximately 5% due to lower transport emissions and the displacement of oil shale power.
- The project is expected to support Estonia's climate targets by increasing the share of renewable electricity in total consumption by 8 percentage points, potentially raising it to 26%.
