Summary

- Small-scale rainwater harvesting and supplementary irrigation have demonstrated the ability to move farmers from a single-crop cycle to producing a second crop, increasing food security and allowing for the cultivation of high-value crops for markets.
- Ethiopia's hydropower potential is estimated at 30,000 MW, but it remains severely under-exploited, with only 767 MW (2.6%) developed as of the report's data.
- The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) facilitates dialogue among 10 countries, but Ethiopia's development potential for hydropower and irrigation is hampered by 1929 and 1959 agreements between Sudan and Egypt, which are not fully recognized by all riparian countries.
- There is a critical need to improve the operation and maintenance (O&M) of existing water schemes, as the government estimates that 30-40% of existing schemes are non-functional.
