Incendios de Chiquitanía: rol de los recursos hídricos en los planes de restauración forestal

This SEI fact sheet describes a pilot program to integrate water resource management into forest restoration plans in the Chiquitanía region of Bolivia following the catastrophic 'mega fires' of 2019.

• The 2019 'mega fire' in Bolivia was one of the largest in the country's history, burning approximately 3.6 million hectares, which represents nearly 10% of the Santa Cruz Department.
• While regional and national agencies in Bolivia, including the Santa Cruz Department, launched restoration plans after the 2019 fires, these plans primarily focus on governance, cultural, environmental, and socioeconomic actions and do not address water resource issues.
• SEI developed a prioritization framework and a Tableau visualization tool that combines remote sensing data on land use and fires (2001-2019) with watershed maps to identify vulnerable basins and prioritize restoration efforts based on the watershed as the management unit.
• Analysis of groundwater recharge indicates that basins in the northern Chiquitanía region have the highest recharge potential and the most groundwater wells; although these areas have not been as heavily affected by fires, they are identified as priorities for water resource management.
