Gender Women environmental defenders: Empowerment for transformative change

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is seeking proposals for events that center the voices of women environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs). The initiative focuses on the intersectional discrimination these women face and aims to foster cross-national networks and scalable practices in environmental protection and human rights advocacy. Priority is given to events that address the specific challenges of women EHRDs in Asia and cover themes such as climate change, disaster risk, and land grabbing.

• Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) globally encounter discrimination and violence, with women EHRDs experiencing an additional layer of gender-based discrimination that intersects with race, class, ethnicity, nationality, and sexuality.
• The call for events prioritizes those that build networks between women environmental defenders across different countries within the Asian region and are sensitive to the specific challenges present in that context.
• Strategic themes of interest for the Gender, Environment, and Development research cluster include land grabbing, natural resource management, climate change, disaster risk, and climate-related displacement and migration.
• Successful proposals must employ an intersectional approach to human rights, promote scalable practices in environmental advocacy, use innovative formats to overcome participation barriers for grassroots organizations, and ensure participant security.
