Futures of Conservation Funding

This case study examines the Bird’s Head Seascape Initiative in West Papua, Indonesia, highlighting the urgent need to transition management to local bodies and establish a sustainable funding model following shifts in traditional financial structures.

• Launched in 2004 by Conservation International and a coalition of international and local partners, the Bird’s Head Seascape Initiative aims to protect the ecological value of West Papua, Indonesia, and is described as a model of indigenous community-driven conservation.
• Due to recent changes in traditional funding, the Bird’s Head Seascape Coalition is required to quickly create a strategy to move management to local entities and create a sustainable funding model.
