Climate development links in Zimbabwe

This research paper examines how implementing the actions in Zimbabwe's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) can simultaneously meet greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and achieve economic development goals, including improvements in public health, biodiversity, and energy security.

• In 2021, Zimbabwe increased the ambition of its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, shifting from a 33% reduction in per capita energy-sector emissions to a target of a 40% reduction across all sectors relative to 2030 baseline emission scenarios.
• The authors analyzed 28 mitigation measures and determined that their implementation could meet emission reduction targets and provide quantifiable development benefits, specifically regarding energy security, sustainable energy use, public health, and biodiversity.
• The paper proposes that integrating methods to assess both economic development and climate mitigation priorities within target-setting assessments, and adopting quantitative assessments of development benefits, can motivate more ambitious climate action.
