Climate development links in Zimbabwe

The paper argues that integrating climate mitigation target-setting with economic development assessments can motivate more ambitious climate action. By modeling 28 mitigation measures, the authors show that Zimbabwe can meet its updated target of a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors by 2030 (relative to baseline scenarios) while gaining quantifiable benefits in biodiversity, public health, sustainable energy use, and energy security.

• Zimbabwe increased its climate ambition in 2021, shifting from a goal of 33% reduction in per capita energy-sector emissions to a target of 40% reduction across all sectors compared to 2030 baseline emission scenarios.
• The implementation of 28 specific mitigation measures can enable Zimbabwe to meet its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and contribute to selected Sustainable Development Goal targets, providing benefits for biodiversity, public health, sustainable energy use, and energy security.
• The authors propose that using prospective, quantitative assessments to identify development benefits from climate mitigation can encourage more ambitious climate action.
