Environmental Governance of Uranium Mining in Niger: A Blind Spot for Development Cooperation

This report examines the gap between the reported environmental and social impacts of uranium mining in Niger and the lack of attention these issues receive in the guiding documents of major development cooperation donors.

• Niger possesses the fourth largest uranium production globally, with export values exceeding 348 million Euros in 2010, a figure that was more than double the total development assistance finance the country received that year.
• Mining permits for minerals including uranium, gold, phosphate, and coal, granted to international investors, cover nearly 10% of Niger's national territory.
• Despite reports from NGOs and media regarding severe human health, social, and environmental impacts from mining, these issues are largely absent from the guiding documents of primary development cooperation donors.
