A Copenhagen Prognosis: Towards a safe climate future

The report argues that current greenhouse gas emission reduction targets are insufficient to prevent devastating climate impacts and self-amplifying warming. It asserts that to maintain a 75% chance of staying below 2°C, global emissions must decline rapidly after 2015 and reach essentially zero by midcentury, a goal it claims is technically feasible and economically affordable.

• Current greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets are inconsistent with the political goal of protecting humanity from high risks of devastating climate impacts and self-amplifying global warming.
• To achieve a 75% probability of limiting warming to below 2°C, global GHG emissions must decrease extremely quickly after 2015 and reach nearly zero by the middle of the century.
• Analytical research at global and regional levels indicates that achieving deep emission cuts is technically feasible, economically affordable, and potentially profitable.
