Charting a Youth Vision

This report, authored by early-career researchers at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), presents a youth-led vision for a healthy planet by 2030. Based on a survey of 1,050 young people across 89 countries, the document advocates for systemic change, the replacement of economic growth with community-focused metrics of prosperity, and the formal integration of youth into political and economic decision-making processes.

• The authors propose a four-part vision for a healthy planet for all by 2030, which is grounded in equality for all, health and well-being for all, living with nature, and solidarity among all people. Realizing this vision requires massive systemic change to eliminate inequalities related to geography, gender, ethnicity, racism, colonialism, and intergenerational gaps.
• The report argues that economic growth is an inappropriate metric for a country's prosperity. Instead, it suggests using metrics focused on health, education, and community living, as well as 'natural capital'—including the integrity of ecosystems, biodiversity, and the quality of soil, water, and air—which increases resilience to climate change.
• There is a critical need to increase the political and financial power of youth in governance. The authors call for the reform of governance to improve accountability and inclusivity, urging policymakers to not only increase youth representation in political forums but to actively implement youth recommendations.
• A survey of 1,050 individuals aged 18–30 from 89 countries informed the report, revealing that more than 50% of respondents experience anxiety due to climate change.
