Economics of soil organic carbon in Western Kenya

This report evaluates the economic benefits and carbon sequestration potential of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices, specifically Conservation Agriculture and Integrated Soil Fertility Management, for smallholder farmers in Siaya County, Western Kenya, where subsistence agriculture faces significant soil degradation.

• The report provides evidence that adopting Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices benefits smallholder farming systems in Western Kenya. The study specifically analyzes the economic impact of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) and Conservation Agriculture (CA) on carbon sequestration potential and household income for smallholder farmers in Siaya County.
• Small-scale subsistence agriculture in Western Kenya is characterized by low yields and inputs, which results in rapid degradation and loss of soil fertility, subsequently harming income security and food production.
• Sustainable Land Management (SLM) practices are noted for their ability to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, which aids in the mitigation of climate change.
