Covid lessons for climate

This review by the Stockholm Environment Institute examines the parallels between the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis to derive lessons for the transboundary management of systemic risks and the improvement of climate change policy and resilience building.

• The COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis both demonstrate how global crises create cascading, cross-border, and long-term impacts that disrupt societies across multiple scales, particularly affecting the most vulnerable through networks of communication, mobility, finance, and trade.
• To improve transboundary climate risk management and resilience, the document recommends mapping cross-sectoral and cross-border impacts of climate extremes, utilizing adaptive risk management strategies that account for uncertainty and heterogeneous decision-making, and adopting a broad definition of resilience that prioritizes ecological resilience and human wellbeing.
