The Geopolitics of Food Security: Barriers to the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger

This report examines the intersection of geopolitics and food security, arguing that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) requires an understanding of how geopolitical challenges—including unilateralism and zero-sum security approaches—hinder efforts to eradicate hunger.

• Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) requires a perspective on food security that extends beyond humanitarian or developmental concerns to include geopolitical linkages. Geopolitical challenges involving unilateralism and zero-sum security approaches negatively impact efforts to eliminate hunger and weaken the governing frameworks for those efforts.
• Geopolitics interacts with food security through four primary overlapping drivers: competition for agricultural resources, international trade vulnerabilities (including politically motivated supply disruptions), armed conflict (which both causes food insecurity and fuels social unrest), and climate change, which alters both political calculations and the physical landscape.
