SLCPs and air pollutant NDCs

This study evaluates the inclusion of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) and air pollutant mitigation in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted between 2015 and 2022, finding a significant increase in both explicit priorities and specific mitigation measures post-2020.

• Explicit references to the mitigation of air pollutants and Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) as priorities more than doubled in NDCs submitted after 2020 compared to those submitted before 2020.
• There has been a significant increase in the number of countries including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and methane within their general greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, and three countries have established explicit targets for the reduction of black carbon.
• The number of specific mitigation measures listed in NDCs increased by 45% post-2020, leading to a substantially larger number of countries having implicit reductions of air pollutants and SLCPs in their NDCs.
