Global Shipping Watch fact sheet

The Global Shipping Watch is an open access platform designed to link maritime emissions to specific supply chain actors by matching cargo records with vessel movements from the AIS system. It aims to overcome barriers to decarbonization by providing data-driven analysis of which companies own cargo and which products are linked to emissions on specific routes.

• Global Shipping Watch uses a methodology that matches detailed cargo records with vessel movements and operations obtained from the AIS system to identify cargo contents, owning companies, and the commodities linked to emissions on specific routes.
• The initial data release for the platform covers 2019 maritime imports and exports for the United States, as well as exports from Indonesia, Peru, Chile, and Brazil.
• Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is a higher proportion than the aviation sector, and contributes significantly to air pollution in densely populated coastal areas.
• A primary barrier to corporate carbon reporting and consumer understanding of footprints has been the inability to link maritime transport emissions to specific consumers, countries, traded products, or companies.
