Global Shipping Watch fact sheet

Global Shipping Watch is a data platform that matches cargo records with AIS vessel movements to attribute maritime emissions to specific companies, products, and routes. It aims to overcome barriers to decarbonization by providing transparency for scope 3 emissions reporting and sustainable supply chain management. The initial 2019 data release covers US imports and exports, as well as exports from Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Indonesia.

• Global Shipping Watch uses a methodology that matches detailed cargo records with vessel movements and operations obtained from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to identify cargo contents, owning companies, and commodity-linked emissions on specific routes.
• The platform addresses a critical data gap where it was previously impossible to link maritime transport emissions to specific companies, products, countries, or consumer choices, which hindered the accurate assessment of scope 3 emissions in corporate reporting.
• Maritime shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, exceeding the aviation sector, and causes significant air pollution in densely populated coastal regions.
• The initial data release for the platform covers 2019 maritime imports and exports for the United States, and exports for Indonesia, Peru, Chile, and Brazil.
