The Gender-Energy Nexus: Evidence and gaps in Colombias coal transition

This report analyzes the gender and intersectional aspects of coal mining and its phase-out in the Cesar region of Colombia, identifying specific policy and research gaps necessary for a just transition.

• The report identifies four primary policy priorities to ensure a just transition from coal: providing targeted support for feminised and informal economies, integrating intersectional analysis into mine closure regulations and processes, improving protection for human rights defenders, and implementing a Public Policy for Women that has been delayed.
• The report outlines three critical research priorities: creating frameworks to analyze the impact of energy transitions on LGBTIQ+ individuals, moving gender and intersectionality operationalization beyond binary frameworks, and collecting longitudinal data regarding the impacts of mine closures.
