State of the Bioeconomy in Eastern Africa 2022

This report introduces the concept of the bioeconomy as a strategic driver for sustainable economic growth in Eastern Africa, highlighting the region's reliance on biological resources and the launch of the East African Community Bioeconomy Strategy to catalyze innovative resource use.

• In Eastern Africa, over 65% of the population relies on biological resources for medicine, energy, food, and other purposes, often using them in raw form and creating significant biological waste, which presents a major opportunity for value addition through a bioeconomy.
• Developing a bioeconomy in Eastern Africa is linked to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals by utilizing natural resources to create jobs, improve food security and health, generate wealth, and integrate smallholder farmers into biobased value chains. Furthermore, sustainable bioenergy and waste conversion are identified as key to combating climate change and protecting the environment.
• The East African Community Bioeconomy Strategy, launched in November 2021 and approved by the EAC Council of Ministers in April 2022, serves as the central framework for the region to support the sustainable and innovative use of bioresources to drive job creation and inclusive economic growth.
