Climate-smart agricultural practices and technologies adoption

This research paper, produced as part of the Behavioural Change Towards Climate-Smart Agriculture (BEATLES) project, examines stakeholder perceptions of drivers and barriers regarding the adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) across five specific European food production systems.

• The study identifies the top three drivers for adopting climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices as economic factors, institutional and policy factors, and personal and psychological factors.
• The primary barriers hindering the adoption of CSA practices are categorized as economic, technology-related, and institutional and policy factors.
• Stakeholders suggest that overcoming adoption barriers requires a combination of financial support, policy changes, and capacity-building to increase attractiveness for farmers, alongside improved stakeholder coordination, sustainable practice incentives, and tailored communication strategies.
