Air Pollution in Cambodia's Garment Sector

This policy brief describes a research project conducted by Cambodia's Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) to investigate air pollutant emissions and worker health impacts within the garment manufacturing sector. The study utilized interviews with 323 workers across 16 factories and 16 factory owners to address a knowledge gap identified in Cambodia's 2021 Clean Air Plan.

• The garment sector is a critical part of Cambodia's economy and employment but is characterized as a highly polluting industry that emits air pollutants through hazardous waste, solid waste, noise, wastewater discharge, and intensive energy use. The specific environmental impacts of the sector regarding air pollution were previously not well understood, a deficiency noted during the creation of the 2021 Clean Air Plan.
