Intersectionality and Energy Transitions: Gender, Social Equity, and Low-Carbon Energy

This research paper examines the relationship between renewable energy projects and social equity, arguing that the transition to low-carbon energy systems does not inherently result in fairer or more inclusive outcomes.

• The transition to low-carbon energy systems is necessary for global climate mitigation, but the process of 'greening' energy systems does not automatically ensure they become more just, inclusive, or fair.
• Renewable energy projects are unable to achieve gender and social equity on their own because energy interventions do not automatically address the structural socio-economic and socio-cultural dynamics already in place.
• Failure to address existing power asymmetries regarding resource distribution and access at the beginning of a transition leads to the replication and transfer of structural inequalities into new energy regimes.
