Cleaner cookstoves in peri-urban Kenya

The study examines the failure of traditional cookstove replacement efforts and uses a pilot project in peri-urban Kenya to identify user archetypes—motivated by money, convenience, or health—to better align stove design and services with user needs.

• Efforts to replace traditional solid biomass cooking methods with energy-efficient stoves often fail because new stoves are used briefly or do not fully replace traditional methods, leading some households to revert to traditional stoves and lose health and climate benefits.
• The study identifies three distinct user archetypes based on their primary motivation for adopting new stoves: saving money, convenience, and health and safety.
• By combining service design methods with quantitative monitoring in a pilot project using biomass pellet cookstoves, the research identified critical weaknesses in the intervention from the perspective of each user archetype.
