Health synergies: International sustainability development national action

This research paper evaluates the framing of human health within four major international agendas—the Paris Agreement, Agenda 2030, the Sendai Framework, and the New Urban Agenda—concluding that greater coherence and governance mechanisms are required to effectively translate these global goals into national policies.

• The research identifies a need for increased awareness of health systems strengthening as a framework to integrate health issues across international agendas, noting that only two health themes exhibited synergies across the analyzed agendas.
• There is a lack of a governance mechanism to support the integration of the Paris Agreement, Agenda 2030, the Sendai Framework, and the New Urban Agenda, which hinders the ability of national and sub-national governments to implement their ambitions.
• The study highlights health leadership as a vital component and suggests that the concept of planetary health is a timely and relevant approach to support the shift toward a healthy planet and population.
