Health synergies: International sustainability development national action

The research uses content analysis to examine the integration of health within global agendas for climate change, sustainable development, disaster risk reduction, and urban transformation. It finds a lack of governance mechanisms and limited thematic synergies, suggesting that health systems strengthening and the concept of planetary health could improve the coherence of national policy implementation.

• The analysis identifies a need for greater awareness of health systems strengthening as a framework to integrate health issues across different international agendas.
• The study found that only two health themes exhibited synergies across the four analyzed international agendas.
• There is currently no governance mechanism to support the integration of the Paris Agreement, Agenda 2030, the Sendai Framework, and the New Urban Agenda, which hinders the ability of national and sub-national governments to implement their goals.
• Health leadership is identified as a vital component, and the concept of planetary health is presented as a timely tool to support the transition toward a healthy planet and population.
