Bangkok Air Pollution Inequality

This policy brief summarizes a study on the relationship between socio-economic status, living and working conditions, and air-pollution exposure in Bangkok, proposing six policy recommendations to mitigate health impacts and reduce exposure inequality.

• Air pollution exposure in Bangkok is unevenly distributed, with higher levels affecting specific groups based on their occupation and living environment. Increased exposure is linked to outdoor work, jobs involving or near cooking, residence near highways and train tracks, living in poor informal settlements, and residing in homes without air conditioning.
• Informal workers are more prone to health symptoms likely caused by air pollution than formal workers. Additionally, most surveyed individuals showed low awareness of local air quality, relying on personal beliefs about their district's air quality rather than official government monitoring data.
• The brief recommends six specific measures for Bangkok: improving communication regarding pollution levels and harms, expanding affordable healthcare and insurance, distributing masks to highly exposed individuals, increasing labor safety training, enhancing vehicle emission inspections to reduce pollution and fund protections, and providing capacity-building for pollution monitoring.
