Transformando la gestión del agua mediante el control de incendios en la Chiquitania

This report from the Stockholm Environment Institute, part of the Bolivia WATCH I project, analyzes the impact of forest fires on the water balance of the Chiquitania region. It examines the degradation of the Chiquitano Dry Forest caused by deforestation, agricultural expansion, and climate change, while exploring the use of modeling tools like WEAP, Tableau, and GEE for sustainable water and forest resource management.

• The Chiquitano Dry Forest is experiencing severe degradation due to a 640% increase in deforestation between 1986 and 2020, with forest loss growing from 1 million to 6.4 million hectares. This trend is driven by agricultural and livestock expansion, and if it persists, the ecoregion could completely disappear by 2050.
• Climate change and the practice of 'chaqueo' (using fire to convert forests into agricultural land) have increased the frequency and intensity of uncontrolled forest fires. This resulted in the devastation of over 4 million hectares of forest in 2019, with a similar amount recorded in 2020.
• The Chiquitano Dry Forest is critical to two of South America's largest water basins: the Amazon and the Paraguay-Plata. Current threats in Santa Cruz include unplanned settlements, land-use changes, and the goals of the Agenda Patriótica 2025, which aims for productive sovereignty by tripling the livestock population.
