Transformando la gestión del agua mediante el control de incendios en la Chiquitania

The report examines the degradation of the Chiquitano Dry Forest due to agricultural expansion, deforestation, and intensifying forest fires, highlighting the risk of total forest disappearance by 2050 and the need for sustainable water management tools.

• Deforestation in the region increased by 640% between 1986 and 2020, rising from 1 million to 6.4 million hectares, driven by agricultural and livestock expansion. If this trend persists, the Chiquitano Dry Forest could be entirely gone by 2050.
• Climate change and the practice of 'chaqueo' (using fire to convert forests to farmland) have increased the frequency and intensity of forest fires. In 2019 and 2020, fires devastated more than 4 million hectares of forest in each of those years.
