Pathways to integrate gendered care work into climate-related emergency preparedness and response

This policy brief provides six recommendation pathways to integrate gendered care work into emergency preparedness and response for climate-related disasters, noting that such disasters disproportionately affect those with care responsibilities, primarily women.

• Climate-related disasters are projected to increase the need for humanitarian assistance to more than 200 million people annually by 2050, following a 2019 figure of 24.9 million people displaced by weather-related hazards. These events disproportionately affect individuals with care responsibilities, which are predominantly held by women, yet initial humanitarian aid often ignores these gendered vulnerabilities.
• The authors propose six evidence-based recommendation pathways for crisis governance and emergency response to address caregiver risks and leverage the potential of crises: redistributing care responsibilities equitably, establishing shock-responsive social protection, institutionalizing care-sensitive risk mapping, incorporating caregiver voices into crisis management, effective knowledge sharing, and treating gendered care responsibilities as cross-cutting issues in international cooperation.
