The SEI Initiative on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change

This fact sheet describes a Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) initiative launched in January 2015 that examines fossil fuel supply investments, infrastructure, and institutions to determine their impact on climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

• The SEI initiative was established in January 2015 to address the need for both demand- and supply-side approaches to climate policy, as most fossil fuel reserves must remain unextracted to prevent dangerous climate change. The initiative aims to understand factors influencing fossil fuel development and to influence policies and investment decisions to align the pace and location of such development with sustainable development.
• The initiative employs a multi-disciplinary approach, combining expertise in law, economics, political science, and energy studies. It utilizes tools such as greenhouse gas emissions accounting, energy modelling, and political economy analysis to identify how infrastructure, investments, and institutions create a lock-in effect of fossil fuel dependence.
