The SEI Initiative on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change

The SEI Initiative on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change, launched in January 2015, aims to analyze the factors influencing fossil fuel development and influence policies to align development with sustainable goals. The initiative argues that climate strategies must address both the demand and supply sides of fossil fuels, as infrastructure and institutions can lock in long-term dependency.

• Effective climate change mitigation requires that the majority of fossil fuel reserves remain unextracted, though this is complicated by the role of extraction and trade in national energy security and economic development.
• While climate policy has historically focused on reducing demand, evidence suggests that both demand- and supply-side approaches are necessary for economic and political reasons.
• The SEI Initiative seeks to identify how infrastructure, investments, and institutions create a lock-in effect of fossil fuel dependency and to develop strategies to end this dependency.
