Por qué un enfoque equitativo es la única manera práctica de abordar la crisis climática

Sivan Kartha warns that failing to address the climate crisis could lead to a catastrophic 5-degree Celsius increase in global temperatures, comparable in scale to the transition out of the last Ice Age. He asserts that while the technology and finance to avoid this exist, they are concentrated among the wealthiest 10% of the population. Kartha concludes that the only practical path to net-zero emissions is for the most privileged to lead the reduction and support the rest of the world in doing the same.

• A failure to stop the climate crisis and the continued burning of fossil fuels could result in the world warming by approximately 5 degrees Celsius, a shift that would represent an existential risk to humanity.
• A 5-degree temperature shift is historically significant; the transition from the last Ice Age to a climate hospitable for human civilization involved a warming of only about 5 degrees, which melted ice sheets several kilometers thick and reorganized global ecosystems.
• The precise impacts of 3, 4, or 5 degrees of warming are unpredictable, but potential consequences include the collapse of coral reefs, increased hurricane intensity, disruption of the South Asian monsoon affecting over one billion people, and intensified wildfires.
• Global emissions must reach zero, but the capacity to do so is hindered by extreme inequality: the richest 10% of the population earns more than half of the world's income and causes more than half of global pollution.
• The only practical and fair method to achieve global zero emissions is for the most privileged individuals and societies, who benefited from fossil fuel-led development, to eliminate their emissions and support less privileged populations in doing the same.
