Metal mobilization and redistribution
Summary
This laboratory study examines the release of metals during the reoxygenation of anoxic sediments from the Eastern Gotland Basin. Over a 96-hour experiment, the study found that metals including Mn, Mo, U, and As are released in higher concentrations than previously recorded, with redox-sensitive metals showing the highest release rates. The findings provide data on the environmental impacts of proposed remediation efforts to restore oxygen to anoxic sea basins.
Key insights
- Reoxygenation of sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin leads to the release of several metals into the water column. Specifically, Arsenic, Ba, Co, Mn, Rb, U, K, Sr, and Mo are released, with calculated basin-wide releases of 8, 50, 0.55, 734, 53, 27, 347,178, 3468, and 156 μg L−1, respectively. Mn, Mo, U, and As were released in higher concentrations than previously measured in the Eastern Gotland Basin.
- Sequential chemical extraction (SCE) indicates that redox-sensitive metals, specifically Mn, U, and Mo, are released into the solution in the highest concentrations. The study also observed a relationship between the initial abundant phase of non-redox-sensitive metals and their release concentrations, with the lowest concentrations belonging to K < Rb < Sr in the exchangeable (E2) phase and As < Ba in the organic-bound (E3) phase.
- Electroconductivity (EC) measurements indicate that the release of metals occurs during the initial phases (12 hours) of the reoxygenation process for both studied sites.
