Climate-related disasters in China

The study examines the relationship between economic growth and climate-related disaster vulnerability in China from 1949 to 2015. It finds that while higher per-capita income is correlated with a significant reduction in human fatalities, it is associated with an increase in direct economic losses. Despite regional differences between the West, Central, and East economic regions, the overall trend shows a decline in vulnerability—measured as a share of population and GDP—across all regions, with temporal changes converging over time.

• In China since 1949, economic development has been linked to a significant decrease in human fatalities from climate-related disasters, but an increase in direct economic losses (DELs).
• Between 1978 and 2015 for mortality and 1990 to 2015 for direct economic losses, vulnerability (as a share of total population and GDP) declined significantly across all of China's economic regions, with these regional trends converging over time.
• There is a correlation between the level of economic development and both human and economic vulnerability, with vulnerability decreasing as per-capita income increases.
