Just Transition in the Meat Sector

The report argues that while shifting toward plant-based diets and away from industrial meat production is urgently needed for environmental and health reasons, such transitions must be planned inclusively to protect vulnerable stakeholders. It applies the 'just transition' framework—previously established in the energy sector—to the meat sector to ensure costs and benefits are evenly distributed among consumers, farmers, workers, communities, and companies.

• A shift toward plant-based diets and away from industrial meat production is urgently required in regions with high consumption levels due to negative impacts on climate, biodiversity, human health, air and water quality, and animal welfare.
• Policies designed to reduce meat output, curtail production practices, or increase prices may significantly impact society because meat supply chains support numerous livelihoods and are tied to cultural traditions and diets.
• Adopting a just transition approach can protect the most vulnerable stakeholders, ensure an even distribution of costs and benefits, and increase public support for the transition.
