Artificial Intelligence for Sustainability

This perspective article explores the potential of combining artificial intelligence (AI) and Earth observation technologies to enhance forest management and sustainability, while also addressing the associated risks and the need for governance mechanisms.

• The integration of artificial intelligence and Earth observation technologies offers opportunities to advance Sustainable Development Goals by improving the stewardship, management, mapping, and monitoring of forest ecosystem services, which supports efforts to combat climate change.
• While these technologies provide benefits, their increased application may introduce new risks that could render climate and sustainability efforts counterproductive.
• The article analyzes the specific opportunities and risks of using AI and Earth observation for global forest protection, and examines governance mechanisms and mitigation strategies for designing sustainable, forest-focused AI.
