Financing and Investment for Sugar Cane and Bioenergy in Africa

This book chapter examines the role of investment and financing in the sugar cane-based bioenergy sector in Africa, noting that while sugar cane has a long history in the region, energy-specific investments have historically been limited but are increasing due to climate change, energy security, and rural development concerns.

• Investment is essential for all ventures, from large commercial enterprises to informal sector activities, requiring human resources, land, tools, and raw materials. While small projects may rely on local resources, larger projects require capital sourced from national or foreign grants, loans, equity, or a combination thereof.
• Investments in the energy aspect of sugar cane in Africa have been limited, though they have gained more attention recently because of rural development, energy security, and climate change.
