Sales and Sales Share

This guide from the Stockholm Environment Institute explains the use of the Sales and Sales Share variables within stock-turnover analyses, detailing how new technology introductions affect overall stock averages and the options for data specification.

• The Sales variable is exclusively used during stock-turnover analyses, which are categorized into Transport Analysis for vehicles and standard Stock Analysis for all other device types. These analyses model how new energy efficiency or emissions standards for new technology sales lead to gradual improvements in the average values of the total stock as older devices are replaced.
• Users can specify Stocks and Sales data using either a bottom-up approach at technology branches or a top-down approach. In the top-down method, total stocks and sales are entered at the top level branches below the Demand branch and then distributed to lower level branches via Sales Share and Stock Share variables; the choice between these approaches is made in the General: Settings screen's Stocks tab.
• The Sales variable defines the addition of new devices starting from the First Sales Year; any sales data entered for years prior to this date is ignored, and stocks for those years are entered as data. Sales are used alongside a 'Survival Profile' lifecycle profile, which is defined for each technology in Current Accounts to describe the gradual retirement of devices as they age.
