No time to dally

A statement by the Stockholm Environment Institute urging immediate action on climate pledges and the rapid ratification of the Paris Agreement to ensure early entry into force.

• The Paris Agreement could enter into force before 2020 because it only requires ratification by at least 55 Parties that collectively account for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The United States and China are currently leading efforts for prompt ratification.
• National governments should not wait for the treaty's formal entry into force to act; instead, they should convert their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) into action plans, increase ambition by targeting more economic sectors and short-lived climate pollutants, and support engagement from businesses and sub-national governments.
• NDCs should be integrated with a long-term vision for sustainable development, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, Agenda 2030, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. An example of such collaboration between government, business, and civil society is Fossil Free Sweden 2030, which aims to create the first fossil-free welfare state to enhance future competitiveness.
